Koos van der Lecq

My work revolves around playing. Playing with paper, cardboard, words, thoughts, movements and society, with notions like ‘why am I doing what I’m doing’, ‘why am I alive’ and ‘in how many ways can you ruin a tiny easter chick’. Loving the unexpected and every sidetrack along the path, getting lost with joy for the confusion and finding comfort in the little things, my work invites you to explore known materials and surroundings in a fresh way. What do you do when you’re lost? And how do you handle yourself when you suddenly find yourself engrossed in the fate of a very tiny person? Do you embrace yourself when you do, feel or think something unexpected? Do you allow yourself to play? Or maybe it’s just fun. But then, I don’t believe in ‘just fun’, because when you’re enjoying something (and playing), you accidentally learn a lot. You might not know yet what you learned, or how that knowledge/skill can be useful, but it could just as well be that, 3 or 10 or even 20 years later, you remember the things you did and what to use it for. To me, that is the most magical thing about being a human and playing around. In the end, my goal is to play, give others the opportunity to play and to play together. Sometimes that looks like a workshop for kids, sometimes like a tiny paper book I leave behind, sometimes like a game in the foyer of a theatre. Because what is life, without a little more play?
